Format documents for print and PDF using CSS or XSL-FO. Antenna House Formatter V5.0 now supports page layouts specified using either CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) or XSL-FO (Extensible Stylesheet Language - Formatting Objects) for formatting documents for PDF and print. With AH Formatter users can now select the stylesheet language and content strategy that best suits their business needs. XSL-FO has long been recognized as a standard for formatting XML for print and PDF and CSS as the standard for displaying HTML on the Web. The missing piece for web developers has always been how to go from Web/HTML to print and PDF with properly formatted pages and documents. AH Formatter V5.0 is the answer. The Lite Edition is a lower priced version for those customers who produce smaller documents (under 300 pages) and don't need all the advanced features of the standard version. Lite offers the same GUI, speed, interfaces and graphic support. The Standalone and Server versions of Lite fits many of today's production requirements.

AH Formatter V5.1 New Features:

Enhancements:

• MIF Output Option is newly added. MIF is a format to interchange information between Adobe FrameMaker and other applications.
• The CSS properties concerning the page and column break, break-before, break-after and break-inside are implemented.
• The FO property span="all" and CSS property column-span="all" have been implemented for the children of multi-column FO block-container and CSS div objects.
• The column-fill property in CSS and axf:column-fill extension property in XSL-FO are implemented.
• It's now available to reset the footnote counter in CSS3.
• Border-parts in CSS3 is available.
• The watermark can now be outputted in PDF.
• Multiple pages of a PDF can be embedded in a single external graphic object.
• Blocks can now be placed outside of the bleed area.
• Oblique/backslant can now be specified to font-style in FO.
• HTML tags are retained in the output document when generating tagged PDF from HTML and CSS.

CSS - The following issues have been corrected:

• When vertical writing was specified in table-cell, the content of the cell was arranged incorrectly.
• When ah-reference-orientation was specified to inline-block, it was not rendered correctly.
• When a page break was inserted within a table, the cell border of the table was not outputted.
• The content of the cell was occasionally doubly outputted.
• @top-left and @top-center occasionally overlapped each other.
• -ah-content-height:scale-to-fit was not effective when specified.
• An unnecessary blank was inserted and the table was arranged under the page when a page break was inserted within the table with margin-bottom specified.
• When content was specified to a::After and a line break was inserted, the content overflowed the area.

XSL-FO - The following issues have been corrected:

• When DOM was used with the COM interface, Missing End Tag was occasionally generated.
• When axf:hanging-punctuation="first"specification was specified, the punctuation was hanged even if it was not the first line of the paragraph.
• fo:inline-container occasionally misaligned to the vertical direction when "Jpan script =" was specified.
• Keep-together specified to fo:table-body also controlled the break between fo:table-body when there were multiple fo:table-body.
• When the block with "All span =" followed the column break, the page was not correctly broken.
• When writing-mode="rl-tb" was specified, the numbers were not outputted correctly.
• The exception error occasionally occurred when formatting Arabic data with Vista.
• When formatting a data with a big table with the table header, the memory occasionally increased.
• The footnote text occasionally overlapped when a footnote was in the table within a list.
• When table extended over the next page and a footnote was in the table-header, the footnote was outputted incorrectly
• Even if text-align="'.' center" or text-align="'.' " axf:text-align-string="center" were specified, text was not center aligned.
• When there was no text before the leader, the leader extended beyond the area.
• The embedded PDF might not be outputted correctly and a blank page was outputted.
• Even if "0pt leader-length.minimum =" was specified, length did not occasionally become 0pt.

Common - The following issues have been corrected:

• The revision bar in the column block occasionally placed not to the column but the entire page area.
• The revision bar in the column block occasionally placed not to the column but the entire page area.
• A font error occurred when there was a space in the font name specified for font-family in non-Windows version.
• If the area tree was specified with render() in the Java interface, an error occurred.
• When outputting PDF-1.4 based PDF/X-1a:2003 etc., "PDF output error" was generated.

What's New in V5.0 MR2

Enhancements:

• The Standalone GUI displays SVG::patterns.
• start-column, end-column, inside-column, and outside-column are added to axf:footnote-position.
• The API's are now available with the standalone license.
• [Reading Options]-[Language] information in Document Properties in the PDF is now available to output. (available with PDF1.4 or later)
• 'Wch' is added as a unit showing the width of full-width characters.
• Improves the formatting speed.

CSS - The following issues have been corrected:

• When trimming of a space between full width punctuations was specified, the line break position was not correct.
• Margin-collapse was not correctly processed in the block where the size was specified.
• The word-wrap: break-word specification was not reflected in the text wrapping around floats.
• The counterbalance of the margin did not occasionally become correct between parent and child elements.

XSL-FO - The following issues have been corrected:

• Columns in a table were not well balanced.
• When the name of the external link of fo:basic-link was figures, the relevant page did not open.
• A list arranged beside the float occasionally became incorrect when a page break occurred.
• The rounding specification of table was not reflected in the background of table-row.
• space-before specified to fo:block was not correctly secured when there was no border specification in fo:block, which was a parent of fo:float.
• When trimming of a space between full width punctuations was specified, characters in the list occasionally overlapped.
• When the table was rotated, the width of the cell and the output position were not correct.
• When axf:footnote-number-reset="page" was specified, footnote numbers were not outputted correctly.
• Footnotes might be outputted to the wrong page.
• max-height did not become effective when multiple fo:block-container were on the same page.
• When multiple fo:table-row were specified, table-marker were overlapped.
• A page broke with a big white space when the height was specified in table, table-row, and table-cell.
• when axf:line-number-reset="page" was specified, numbers were not reset when the table broke or cells overflowed.
• The position of the side note was not correctly outputted when the anchor was in FO which generated the reference area.
• The border of table-marker might not be correct.
• When the table extended over the next page, the position of the footnote in table-header was outputted incorrectly.
• When there were table and block in block-container and it was not possible to break between table and block according to the keep condition, the block-container occasionally wholly moved to the next page without being broken in the table.
• An error occurred when "default" was used for master-name and master-reference.
• Punctuations occasionally overflowed from the cell.
• An exception error occasionally occurred when a child of fo:table-row had fo:retrieve-table-marker.

Common - The following issues have been corrected:

• The XMLDOMDocument property did not function correctly with the COM interface.
• The specification of left or right using the clear property did not match with the actually targeted float.
• When setting the security with PDF embedding, the file that could not open was generated.
• When embedding a specific PDF, an error occurred when opening the generated PDF.
• When data with the Form field was outputted to PDF, the text in the field was not occasionally displayed.
• When missing-glyph="0" was specified in the option settings, missing-glyph was not detected.
• If the unit of px or em were specified for the size property, it occasionally became an error.
• When the specified value of the size property is only length, the specification might be disregarded.

Other:

• When PDF was embedded in the input data, an unnecessary text was occasionally displayed in GUI.

What's New in V5.0MR1

Enhancements - The following CSS properties has been implemented or revised.

CSS - The following issues have been corrected:

• When data contents ',' + white space + Latin alphabet, the line doesn't break at the white space and the characters might overflow from the content area.
• When position: absolute; was specified in the inline, the line might break half way.
• The comment written in CSS might become an error.
• The targeted base URI referred by the relative URI in CSS was not correct.
• Relative specification in the redirected HTML was not correctly interpreted.
• The border occasionally influenced the boundary of the form in GUI when there was a border in the page block.
• content: None was the same processing as content: normal.
• The line doesn't break at the place where it should be and the characters overflowed from the region.
• The size of the caption, the margin might not be correct.
• The formatting might not end when the element that was not able to be recognized was included.
• The margin of table-caption was invalid.
• The marker and inline-block of the list in the column were not processed correctly.

XSL-FO - The following issues have been corrected:

• When fo:index-key-reference page-number-treatment="link" was used for linking, it did not link correctly.
• The formatting speed of a fo file occasionally became extremely slow.
• The link in the index of output PDF did not occasionally function.
• The width of the rotated table cell might not be correct.
• The splitted table was not well balanced.

Common - The following issues have been corrected:

• When the file was referred to specifying the relative path in data, it did not work correctly.
• When outputting to INX, the box was out of alignment and the radio button occasionally overlapped.
• When outputting to INX, a table might not be outputted.
• The color fill in CGM data might not be correctly outputted.
• The specification of linking to the external file might not be effective in the SVG option setting.

Other:

• When setting the URL specified with ID in the HTML file, it might not open in GUI.
• When formatting HTML data in GUI, 'Page Select' in the PDF Output dialog changed into Multi Volume output when selecting the output range.

What's new in V5.0?
Antenna House Formatter V5.0 now comes with support for formatting XML and HTML for PDF and Print using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).

Why is V5.0 important? XSL-FO has traditionally been used for formatting XML for print and PDF.  CSS has traditionally been used for web design using XML.  For companies that needed to produce both print and web from their XML this meant using one stylesheet language for web design and another language or tool for print design. V5 with support for CSS for the first time enables the use of one stylesheet language and stylesheet to meet the need for both web and print.

V5’s flexible licensing options enable a customer to purchase a license that supports either CSS or XSL-FO or one that supports both CSS and XSL-FO.  Now you have the option to select the stylesheet language and content strategy that best suits your business needs.

What is V5.0 Lite?

AH Formatter V5.0 Lite is a lower priced version for those customers who produce smaller documents (under 300 pages) and don't need all the advanced features of the standard version. Lite offers the same GUI, speed, interfaces and graphic support but for less than one-third of the price. The Standalone and Server versions of Lite fits many of today's production requirements.

Limitations of Lite

• Total page number of the formatted pages are limited to 300 per 1 document. The watermark that shows the limited version is displayed and the URL of our Website is displayed at the bottom of the pages which exceed 300.
• PDF/X, PDF/A and Tagged PDF are not supported.
• Cannot linearize PDF for Fast Web View.
• Cannot use the PDF Digital Signature Module.
• Cannot perform 2-pass format.
• Cannot save and load the area tree.
• Cannot output TEXT.
• Cannot format by setting the Project file of Antenna House XSL Report Designer.
• MathML drawing is not supported. In order to use the function of MathML, you will have to purchase the AH Formatter MathML Option separately.
• The following extensions are not supported. (When there is no specification written, they are common for XSL extension and CSS extension.
  • Printer marks such as a crop mark

  • Bookmarks (If a bookmark is basic, it's available.)

Building on the strengths of the CSS3 specification and Antenna House XSL Formatter, Antenna House Formatter V5.0 has added the capability that now enables web designers to use CSS to add print and PDF output to their systems by using all the features and functionality that Antenna House has developed during the past 8 years as the supplier of the most powerful XSL-FO formatting software available.

New to AH Formatter is the XPS Output Option that enables the output of XPS (XML Paper Specification) files.

PANTONE Color Support
AH Formatter V5 provides the ability for more than 1000 PANTONE Colors to be converted into RGB or CMYK values automatically by using AH Formatter PANTONE Option. Possible to specify the PANTONE colors for separation color (spot color) simply by putting only the name of the PANTONE colors in FO.

Supports PDF/X and PDF/A
AH Formatter V5.0 supports PDF/X. PDF/X is a specification that places much value on exchanging date and defined by ISO for printing purpose. PDF/A is a format for long-term preservation of an electronic document and it is also defined by ISO.

Web Service Interface
Web Service Interface V2.3 is an option for Antenna House AH Formatter Server Licenses to further support the use of AH Formatter V5.0 via the Internet using SOAP/HTTP.

Accessible PDF
AH Formatter V5.0 can generate the Tagged PDF for enhancing the accessibility to persons with sight problems. This is a function indispensable to comply with Section 508, the law of the United States enforced on June 21, 2001.

Table Auto Layout
AH Formatter V5 supports table-layout="auto." in the XSL-FO specification, which is not supported by many of the formatting software. This function arranges the table layout suitably without specifying the width of a cell. It's suitable for almost all tables which do not require the strict value of the width, and is very convenient. When the formatting speed poses a problem, please specify table-layout="fixed" instead and specify fixed width in all cells.

Integration Interface
Antenna House provides Command line interface, .NET interface, COM interface, Java interface and C++/C interface. The various interfaces make for easy system integration of Formatter with web applications, content management systems, and other software products.

The .NET interface and the COM interface are available for Windows only.

High quality PDF for SVG, MathML, EMF and WMF
Vector information for SVG, MathML, EMF and WMF is retained in PDF, thus enhancing the quality of output images and meeting the increasing demand for delivery of vectors in the output.

V5.0 makes it possible to draw high-resolution MathML in PDF. Lite is available to use with AH Formatter MathML Option.

PostScript output and SVG output
AH Formatter PostScript Output Option makes PostScript output available. With the new SVG Output module it is now possible to create SVG 1.1, SVG Basic, and SVG Tiny files using AH Formatter V5.0. This function requires AH Formatter SVG Output Option.

Possible to get the .NET native parser output
With the .NET Interface when XSL-FO is generated from XML and XSL using an XSLT processor that transformation can now be passed directly and seamlessly to Formatter without passing it through a temporary file first.

The .NET and the COM interfaces can now also get the DOM directly without passing through a temporary file. This has the effect of slightly improving performance.

Direct Printer output
In Windows version, it's possible to output the formatted result directly to the printer without passing through PDF. It's also possible to get the formatted result and print it immediately by using GUI.

Multilingual Language
V5.0 supports almost any language which is supported by Unicode including Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Japanese (Hiragana and Katakana), Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Hangul, Arabic, Hebrew and Thai. It offers the abilities to write in vertical mode, to run the text from right to left as in Arabic and Hebrew and also to create multilingual documents with language mixtures on the same page and even on the same line.

Supports the embedding of PDF into PDF
An arbitrary page of other PDF can be embedded into PDF.

Possible to hyphenate over 40 or more languages
The former "Hyphenation Option" is now a standard part of Formatter. The Hyphenation function integrates the very powerful hyphenation algorithms from Computer Hyphenation Ltd., which enhances the quality of hyphenation and greatly simplifies setting up Formatter to hyphenate over 40 different languages.

AH Formatter support for DITA
AH Formatter V5.0 has a new set of DITAtoFO Stylesheets for the DITA Open Toolkit 1.4 that supports bookmarks, table of contents, indexes and several other features has been made public.

DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) is an XML-based architecture for authoring, producing, and delivering technical information. The architecture and a related DTD was developed by IBM. DITA is organized around the principle of the topic as the highest level structure and is intended to support the reusability of content. It has been developed especially for managing a large set of documentation to be distributed in multiple channels.

DITA has grown well and its specification has been defined by the OASIS DITA Technical Committee since 2004. DITA version 1.0 was approved as an OASIS Standard on May 3rd, 2005.

• The topic as an organizing principle
• Reuse of whole topics, as well as reuse of partial topics through the use of content references
• Specialization of elements to provide
• Property-based processing that makes topics easier to find
• Making use of existing tagsets and tools

Antenna House DITAtoFO Stylesheet
The DITA Open Toolkit is an implementation of the OASIS DITA Technical Committee's specification for Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) DTDs and Schemas. DITA-OT (DITA Open Toolkit) transforms DITA content (maps and topics) into deliverable formats such as HTML, DocBook, and PDF. The current version is 1.4.3.

Antenna House provides a stylesheet that transforms DITA into XSL-FO so that you can format and print through the DITA Open Toolkit 1.4.3 using AH Formatter. This kit is composed of the batch file, the shell script file and the ant build file.

Maintenance Service

Warranty:
AH Formatter V5 standard is provided with a 90 day warranty. AH Formatter V5 Lite doesn't include a 90 day warranty.

Who is entitled to receive the maintenance service?

• AH Formatter V5 Standard customers with 90 day warranty. Customers who subscribe to the Annual Maintenance Service per one year after 90 day warranty
• AH Formatter V5 Lite customers who subscribe to the Annual Maintenance Service per one year

If the warranty or annual maintenance period has expired customers may purchase an annual maintenance agreement by paying the retroactive maintenance to when their warranty or previous annual maintenance agreement ended. The customer is then entitled to continued support, the latest version of AH Formatter and all upgrades that become available during the period of the new agreement.
